Two in One Weekend!

This weekend was eventful, with two of my short plays opening on two separate continents! I also had the pleasure of attending EastLine Theatre’s production of This Play Was Never About Noses, adapted and directed by my dear friend Morgan Moffitt.

This was the kind of weekend that would have felt impossible two years ago, when every theatre in the world was closing down one by one. It’s amazing to think about how far I’ve come since the day in March 2020 when I found out that schools were closed and my current children’s production was canceled. I decided to write my first play for adults that week and haven’t looked back!

This weekend began on Thursday night, with the opening of my short melodramatic comedy My Beloved, My Axiom. The piece was produced by New Ambassadors Theatre Company in NYC as part of HEARTbroke 2022. It was performed at the HEREarts center. This production featured Maile Binion as Jean, John Pena Griswold as Kevin, and Matthew Menendez as Karl. It was directed by Sydney Burtner. I was a little bit worried about this one, as it has a pretty major subplot involving Russia, but a few rewrites at the eleventh hour meant that the show could go on!

I am going to be able to see this production in person in just a few days, and I could not be more excited! I’ve been told the director will also be in the audience that night, so it will be the first time the whole team gets to meet in person!

The last time I was able to see my work performed in person was pre-omicron. I hope this is truly a return to in-person theatre - making it AND watching it!

I would not have been able to attend this weekend’s second production in person regardless of the covid situation, however, because it was performed in London!

Creo Theatre produced the second production of my historical re-telling of The Little Mermaid, A Voice From the Prussian Sea. It was performed at the Hens and Chickens Theatre. The performance featured Ginny Adams as Zelde, Ella Jump as Lara, and Ciaran Castel as Marcus. It was directed by Ronan Radin. I’ve heard from the director that it was very well received, so I’m glad to know my piece (which, granted, is set in a European country) has international appeal! The next production will be back here in the US, however!

I still have several productions coming up this month. Next weekend I have two performances and a reading, and two more productions the weekend after that! While this has been a whirlwind month, I am looking forward to things slowing down so I can get back to writing! As always, fun things are in the works!
