What’s New in Playwriting?

The Aphra Behn Festival was certainly the highlight of my theatrical year so far, but I figured I owe the world a quick update about what has been going on since the end of February!

First, Mirrorbox Theatre in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, produced a public workshop reading of my full-length adaptation of The Great Gatsby, These Gilded Souls. I couldn’t be there myself, but I’m told that it was well-received, especially by the actors themselves, who had a blast!

Beyond that, March and April were ABSURDLY prolific months for me! There was never a moment when I wasn’t writing, and I’m really happy with most of the work I managed to produce!

I managed to accomplish the following:

  • Officially completed my first full draft of The Care and Feeding of Restless Spirits, which will receive a public workshop this November

  • Tried my hand at writing the one-minute play for the first time and created four micro-scripts that I really enjoy

  • Completed a new one-act comedy play called Body Horror

  • Completed a new ten-minute horror play called Come Back Right, which will receive a workshop with Outta Bounds Productions in early June

  • Won “End of Play” month by completing the first draft of a full-length play during the month of April 2023, meaning I completed two full-length first drafts within a two-month period?!?!

I am looking forward to two publications during the month of June. First, I’ll have a monologue from Adventurers Anonymous published in Monologues by LGBTQIA+ Writers for LGBTQIA+ Actors, just in time for pride month. Then, my Zoom play, Fish Tank, will appear in Stage It & Stream It: Plays for Virtual Theatre from Applause Books.

I may not be submitting, but I am certainly creating, and I hope these pieces yield fabulous opportunities down the line! In the meantime, I’m reading a lot and trying to decide what to create next!
