Murdering Medea In Development
In April 2023, I completed the first draft of my newest full-length play, Murdering Medea, for the Dramatist Guild’s End of Play initiative. For a play with a cast of only three performers, it has proven to be a wild and ambitious project! It’s my first foray into something ‘Theatre of Cruelty’ adjacent while still maintaining my signature comedic and hopeful tone. After an early draft was a top ten finalist in the Bottle Alley Theatre Company’s Open Script Competition, I decided to pursue further development and see what I could learn about this timely and political piece.
The play received its first public developmental reading in Ohio, where the story was set! Kent State at Trumbull produced a reading as part of their Scripts & Sips program for 2023. I was able to attend rehearsals virtually and take copious notes. The process helped me prepare a fresh draft for the next development opportunity!
The next reading was with an organization I worked with a great deal last year - The Bechdel Group, based locally in NYC! Not only do they produce public developmental readings, but they facilitate an audience response process to assist with development. I was lucky to be there in person because the responses came FAST AND FURIOUS! Audiences have a lot of thoughts and strong feelings about this play! It was exciting and invigorating to know my words had inspired such responses, and left me feeling optimistic about the piece!
I do not yet have a draft up on NPX because I want to do some more work on it before I make it available. However, if you are interested in giving this one a read, you can always reach out to me through my NPX contact form!
